EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
MONTHLY REPORT
MAY 2007
By Terri Pfister,
Boardmember
Reminder – Board Vacancy
As a result of Bob Baker's
election to Vice President, a vacancy has occurred on the WMCA Executive
Committee for a Board Member. WMCA Members interested in serving on the
Executive Committee can find the Notice of Vacancy and instructions for
filing on the
www.wmcaclerks.org
website. The deadline for filing is Monday, May 7, 2007.
Final Calculated Auction Results
The annual conference auction brought in an
awesome $4,647! The Puerto Vallarta trip raffle produced a net income
of $1,239.88 and the $1 raffle brought in $851. Way to go Scholarship
and Fundraising Committees for putting on an outstanding auction and
productive raffle sales! And thanks for the great response from all of
you who donated items for the auctions and to our members and guests who
bid on and purchased items. Without your enthusiastic participation, we
couldn’t have raised this amazing amount for the scholarship fund.
You’ve all given back to WMCA in a big way.
Conference Evaluation Results
The
conference held March 11-14, 2007, at Semiahmoo Resort was very
successful and provided great educational, training, and networking
opportunities. Please take a moment to view the Conference Evaluation
Results posted at
http://www.wmcaclerks.org/2007%20Conference/Evaluation%20Results%20-%202007.pdf.
The Executive Committee values your input, and the information gained
from the evaluation results is considered and used in the future
planning of educational sessions and conferences.
NEW IIMC
Certification Requirements
Please check out the IIMC website for the new certification requirements
and the new CMC and MMC application forms. New forms must be used
even if you have entered either program before Jan. 1, 2007, and even
though the necessary point totals are different. MMC candidates, be
aware there are no more "levels" to the certification process. You will
enter MMC track and then accumulate points until you have enough for
your MMC. If you are at mid-level, you may wish to contact Dr.
Mohammed Eftekhari at IIMC (mhe@iimc.com)
for details on how the new guidelines apply to your situation.
Fall MMC Academy
Save The Date: A Fall MMC Academy will be
held on Friday, October 26, at the Coast Wenatchee Center. A block of
rooms has been reserved for Thursday night, October 25,
at $60/single, $80 double rates (plus tax). Further details will be
announced as we have them. This will be an IIMC sanctioned session good
for 3 education points (CMC or MMC). You can also take this opportunity
to check out our 2008 conference site!
Professional Development (PD I, II, III, and
Master Academy) Classes
Register Now: It is not too late to register for Professional
Development classes. Don't miss the opportunity to move forward toward
your CMC or MMC certification this year - lots of great learning, plenty
of networking, and fun besides. The classes are held at the
University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. The class schedule is as
follows:
- Professional Dev
I: June 3–8, 2007
- Professional Dev
II: June 10–15, 2007
- Professional Dev
III: June 17–22, 2007
- Master Academy
(formerly Professional Dev IV): June 6–9, 2007
The MMC Academy (PD
IV) is a completely new program so you may attend and
receive credit even if you attended previously. The class has been
approved by IIMC for 12 points toward your MMC certification - register
as soon as possible as there is some preparation work to complete before
the Institute. Although no early registration fee applies, the early
registration deadline for PD IV was April 20 in light of the prep work
to be completed; there is still room and time for applicants to register
for this class.
There is an early
registration fee for Professional Dev I, II, and III and the deadline is
May 5. Register online at
www.capps.wsu.edu/NCI. You just need to register by that date; the
payment can be sent later.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
MAY 2007
Dear WMCA Members,
Thank you for giving
me the opportunity to represent WMCA as your President at the City
Clerks Association of California (CCAC) annual conference in beautiful
Palm Springs on April 11-13, 2007. Photo
The theme of their
conference was “Focus on the PEAK” (Professional Empowerment
through Advocacy and Knowledge). The educational sessions
focused on leadership and management, and the tramway journey on the
world’s largest rotating tram car to the “PEAK” of the San Jacinto
Mountain was a spectacular “climbing” experience! Photo
Although I was a little nervous as the tram rotated and swayed as we
escalated to higher levels, the view was worth it!
Photo
The opening session
kicked off with a “star” performance by the Copy Katz Showroom Bistro’s
very own Reba McEntire.
Photo What an uplifting
bang to set the mood of the conference!
The educational
sessions included:
- The
Nine Essential Skills for Leaders by
Carolyn Warner
-
Political Savvy Tales from the Trenches by
Brad Hudson, City Manager of Riverside (see photo)
-
Mentoring by Scott Barber, Community
Development Director of Riverside
-
Gadflies – A Humorous and Interactive Session
by Rich Holmer, City Manager of Riverbank
-
Elections, Public Records & the Brown Act (Open Meetings Act)
by Tim Brown, City Attorney of Napa
-
Attitude & Communication & Productivity by
Scott Marcus
- What is
the League of California Cities (LCC) & How Does it Involve Me
by Dwight Stenbakken, Deputy Director, LCC
Copies of the
educational session handouts can be found on our website at
www.wmcaclerks.org/ccacconfmaterials.pdf
(large pdf file!) if you are interested in seeing them. In
addition to the educational handouts, I brought back copies of the
CCAC’s conference evaluation form, raffle and vendor list for our
Conference Planning and Education Committees’ information.
The networking
opportunities with Deb Marlar, Alaska Municipal Clerks Association
President; Barbara Christensen, Oregon Association of Municipal
Recorders President; Shalice Reynoso, CCAC President
Photo, Pam
McCarthy, CCAC First VP, and other CCAC members; Region IX Reps Colleen
Nicol and Sheri Pierce; IIMC incoming President Chuck Tokar, Education
Director Mohammad Eftekhari and Chris Shalby, Interim Executive
Director; were extremely valuable to further strengthen WMCA’s
relationship with our affiliates and reaffirm the value of education and
training in our professions.
Again, thank you for
this learning opportunity and “growth” experience. Attending the CCAC
conference validated that WMCA is doing so many right things in raising
the levels of our profession through our academies, NCI Institute,
Region IX, annual conferences, regional associations and collaboration
with other related associations. I am so proud of us! WMCA rocks!
Alice M. Bush,
President
